Simulation of the Recent Multidecadal Increase of Atlantic Hurricane Activity Using an 18-km-Grid Regional Model

چکیده
Atlantic basin increased markedly in the years 1995– 2000, compared with levels in the 1970s and 1980s. For example, the accumulated cyclone energy (ACE) index in the At lantic has been above the 1951–2000 median for all years from 1995 to 2005 except for the El Niño years of 1997 and 2002 (e.g., Bell et al. 2006). The increase in activity since the early 1980s has been confirmed using homogenized satellite-based records (Kossin et al. 2007). Two recent seasons (2004 and 2005) have been exceptionally active in terms of U.S. landfalling hurricanes (particularly for the Florida and the Gulf Coast regions), compared to typical activity levels in recent decades (Landsea 2005). In this report we introduce a new regional atmospheric model designed to simulate full seasons of tropical cyclone (TC) activity in the Atlantic. By testing the model against observed interannual variability and trends, we hope to

Dynamical Downscaling Projections of 21 st Century Atlantic Hurricane 1 Activity : CMIP 3 and CMIP 5 Model - based Scenarios
20 Twenty-first century projections of Atlantic climate change are downscaled to explore the 21 robustness of potential changes in hurricane activity. Multi-model ensembles using the 22 CMIP3/A1B (Late 21 st century) and CMIP5/RCP4.5 (Early and Late 21 st century) scenarios are 23 examined. Ten individual CMIP3 models are downscaled to assess the spread of results among 24 the CMIP3 (but not th...
متن کاملNatural and Forced North Atlantic Hurricane Potential Intensity Change in CMIP5 Models*
Possible future changes of North Atlantic hurricane intensity and the attribution of past hurricane intensity changes in the historical period are investigated using phase 5 of the Climate Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP5), multimodel, multiensemble simulations. For this purpose, the potential intensity (PI), the theoretical upper limit of the tropical cyclone intensity given the large-scal...
متن کاملImpact of Atlantic multidecadal oscillations on India/Sahel rainfall and Atlantic hurricanes
[1] Prominent multidecadal fluctuations of India summer rainfall, Sahel summer rainfall, and Atlantic Hurricane activity have been observed during the 20th century. Understanding their mechanism(s) will have enormous social and economic implications. We first use statistical analyses to show that these climate phenomena are coherently linked. Next, we use the GFDL CM2.1 climate model to show th...
متن کاملThe recent increase in Atlantic hurricane activity: causes and implications.
The years 1995 to 2000 experienced the highest level of North Atlantic hurricane activity in the reliable record. Compared with the generally low activity of the previous 24 years (1971 to 1994), the past 6 years have seen a doubling of overall activity for the whole basin, a 2.5-fold increase in major hurricanes (>/=50 meters per second), and a fivefold increase in hurricanes affecting the Car...
متن کاملSimulated reduction in Atlantic hurricane frequency under twenty-first-century warming conditions
Increasing sea surface temperatures in the tropical Atlantic Ocean and measures of Atlantic hurricane activity have been reported to be strongly correlated since at least 1950 (refs 1–5), raising concerns that future greenhouse-gas-induced warming could lead to pronounced increases in hurricane activity. Models that explicitly simulate hurricanes are needed to study the influence of warming oce...
